Are You Prepared?
Most people don’t think about disability insurance at all. They might think of life insurance so that their families aren’t financially impacted when they die, money that helps the survivors go on with their lives.
But you’re a lot more likely to become disabled long before you die, and you’re more likely to become temporarily disabled several times. You might get into an accident. You might get hurt on the job. You might get an illness that prevents you from working. And if you can’t bring in any income, or you can’t work as much so your income is less than before, you could lose your car, you could lose your house, your kids might not be able to stay in school.
That’s the great thing about having your own insurance policies. You can have chronic, critical, and terminal illness riders built right into your insurance policy. Those can work like your own personal disability insurance, separate from your job’s disability insurance policy. Those riders make sure that you can get your healthcare paid for, your car note paid for, your house note paid for. And it’s completely under your control.
The disability insurance on your job can take months, even years to pay out. By that time, you and your family are out on the streets! But if you have your own insurance, that can kick in long before your job’s insurance does.
Also, the disability insurance from your job is helpful, but it can also be a challenge to get. You miss one checkbox on the form, you miss one doctor’s appointment, you forget to return one phone call or email – BAM! Your disability check is held up. When you have your own insurance with the right riders on it, you just give me a call, and I can get it taken care of. You’re basically creating your OWN disability insurance through the riders on your other insurance.
In addition, you CAN get your OWN disability insurance! In fact, everyone who works or has a business should have their own disability insurance, so that if anything happens, your quality of life is not impacted.
I have two stories about disability insurance – one time when I didn’t have it, and one time when I did.
One time I got sick, and I had no disability insurance. I was out of work for 18 months because I got sick and couldn’t work, and then I couldn’t get better because I was so stressed about my bills.
A second time, years later, I got sick, but I did have disability insurance, and I was able to get better within six weeks because I wasn’t stressed – my bills were paid, everything was taken care of, so my body wasn’t having to heal from both my illness and my stress. I only had to use it for one month because I had the peace of mind to not have to work, and just heal.
Disability insurance gives you the peace of mind that you need so you can fully heal, and get back to living your life.
